Homemade Vapor Rub

In the Spanish culture Vicks VapoRub cures everything. Whenever I had a cold growing up my grandma (aka mi abuella) and mom would always bust out the Vicks VapoRub, so the other day when I wasn't feeling good I immediately ran to the medicine cabinet to grab my cure all rub.  Now that I am a bit more conscious about the products I use on my body, I took a quick look at the ingredients and to no surprise this stuff is loaded with harmful toxins.

Store bought brands contain special petrolatum (processed crude oil) and turpentine, which is typically used as an oil paint thiner - gross why would you want to rub that on your kid?!  Turpentine is a toxic substance that is unsafe to use on the skin over large areas and is especially harmful for children (stay away! ) The new greaseless formula is even worse – parabens, diazolidinyl urea (a formaldehyde releasing chemical that is toxic upon . . . inhalation!²) and PEG-100 Stearate (which is often contaminated with cancer-inducing dioxane).

So of course after all this research, I decided to make my own clean version! This was pretty simple to make since I had most of the essential oils on hand. I used coconut oil and olive oil as the base since my pantry is always stocked with both. I've read that you can use beeswax also but I didn't have that available.

R E C I P E :

2 Tablespoons Coconut Oil
1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
30 Drops Eucalyptus oil
15 drops peppermint oil
15 drops tea tree oil

Melt coconut oil if solid, mix all ingredients, pour into jar with seal.

* Please note that this recipe should be used for adults since it is very potent. If you want to make a rub for the little ones (over 2 year of age) I would recommend using 10 drops of each essential oil. Peppermint oil should be avoided if pregnant*
