Refreshing Watermelon Lime Water

Watermelon is the perfect food on those sweltering days when its too hot to eat anything else. If you live in New York like me, you know that the weather here has been brutally hot and staying hydrated is essential. I made this refreshing drink the other day as an alternative to cooling down with a glass of ice tea and i can't get over how refreshing it was.  All you need is some watermelon, a lime, fresh basil, and a blender. Can you say summer in glass?

S R P O U T  T I P: Watermelon helps the body flush out toxins because it contains the organic compound citrulline,  an amino acid that has been shown to help the liver and kidneys filter and get rid of ammonia. Ammonia comes in external forms, but is also a by-product of the proteins our bodies are burning up constantly for energy, and it’s quite damaging to our cells.

I N G R E D I E N T S:

2 Tablespoons fresh basil
1 Tablespoon raw cane sugar ( Optional if you want it more on the sweeter side )
1 Cup boiling water
4 Cups seedless watermelon - The key to this drink is to use the ripest fruit you can find.
Juice of 1 lime

D I R E C T I O N S:

Put the basil leaves and sugar in a small pot and crush the leaves with a wooden spoon. Pour in the boiling water and stir until the sugar dissolves. Set aside to steep and cool for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, in a blender, purée the watermelon with 2 cups cold water. Strain the watermelon liquid and basil liquid through a fine strainer into a large bowl; discard the solids. Pour the liquid into a large pitcher. Add the lime juice and 3 cups cold water; stir to combine. Serve over ice.
